Rethinking Discipline for Highly Sensitive Kids

Raising Highly Sensitive Kids. No Filter.

Hey there, Mama!

I used to think discipline was all about consistency—setting firm consequences and sticking to them, no matter what. That’s what I believed “good” parenting looked like. So I kept trying to do it right. But every time I corrected my son, even gently, it lead to tears and meltdowns.

What I didn’t realize back then was that the very strategies I thought were helping were actually causing more harm.

In fact, It took me a long time to realize that many of the things I thought I should be disciplining for were just... not actually that important. Like the time I signed him up for soccer and kept insisting he had to go because he “committed.” He was five. He hated every second of it.

Eventually, I pulled him out—and honestly, it was the first time I realized that honoring his sensitivity was the only thing that mattered.

This week, we’re talking about what it means to rethink discipline—especially when you're parenting a child who feels everything deeply.

And I’d love to hear from you:

What’s been your biggest discipline challenge? Or what’s something you used to think you needed to discipline for—but don’t anymore? Hit reply and tell me.

Why Traditional Discipline Doesn’t Work for Highly Sensitive Kids—And What to Try Instead

From rethinking the very concept of discipline to implementing strategies that prioritize connection over correction, you'll find practical tools to navigate those challenging moments with empathy and understanding.

🔧 HSC MOM HACK OF THE WEEK

The Giant Digital Calendar That Saved My Sanity

The Problem:
If you’ve ever been blindsided by a meltdown because your kid “didn’t know” about something you told them five times, welcome to the club. Verbal reminders only go so far—especially for sensitive kids who need extra time to mentally prep for what’s coming.

The Fix:
Enter the Skylight Calendar. Yes, it’s a giant digital calendar. Yes, it’s prominently displayed in our kitchen. And yes, it has absolutely saved my brain. Brody now walks by, sees what’s coming up, and actually asks questions instead of panicking. It’s like a visual anchor for both of us—helping him feel safe and me feel one step ahead.

Bonus: you can add chores, track rewards, and even plan meals. (ADHD mamas, this part is for us.)

Psst…. it would make a great mother’s day gift 😉

Crispy, Quick, and Picky-Eater Approved: Homemade Tenders in 15 Minutes

Let’s be honest: chicken tenders are basically the unofficial mascot of picky eaters everywhere. But nightly takeout? Not exactly part of anyone’s parenting plan.

This homemade version from The Pioneer Woman is shockingly easy, kid-approved, and uses our MVP appliance—the air fryer. The outside gets super crispy, the inside stays juicy, and best of all? You control the ingredients. No mystery meat. No begging your kid to eat. Just a solid weeknight win that doesn’t require you to turn on the oven or lose your mind.

🍗 You can keep a stash in the freezer and tossing them in the air fryer for fast lunches or post-soccer meltdowns. Highly recommend.
